VPS Guides and Tutorials

Step-by-step guides for running your own server well. Every guide uses commands you can paste, explains why each step matters, and notes the differences between Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux.

Beginner

Secure a new Linux VPS

The first fifteen minutes on a fresh server: user, SSH keys, firewall, updates and brute-force protection.

Beginner

SSH key authentication

Create an Ed25519 key on Windows, macOS or Linux, install it on your server and switch off passwords.

Beginner

UFW firewall setup

Default-deny rules on Ubuntu and Debian: SSH, web, rate limits, per-IP access and Docker caveats.

Beginner

firewalld on AlmaLinux and Rocky

Zones, services, rich rules and runtime versus permanent changes on RHEL-family servers.

Intermediate

Install Docker on Ubuntu

Docker Engine and Compose from the official repository, with log rotation, restart policies and safe port publishing.

Intermediate

nginx reverse proxy with HTTPS

Put nginx in front of an app or container and get free, auto-renewing TLS certificates.

Intermediate

WordPress on nginx and MariaDB

A fast, self-managed WordPress stack: nginx, PHP-FPM, MariaDB and HTTPS on Ubuntu or Debian.

Intermediate

WireGuard VPN server

A private WireGuard VPN on your own VPS: server keys, client configs, routing and firewall rules.

Beginner

Add swap space

Create a swap file, tune swappiness and understand when swap helps and when it hides a sizing problem.

Beginner

Automatic security updates

unattended-upgrades on Ubuntu and Debian, dnf-automatic on RHEL family, plus reboots and notifications.

Beginner

Connect to Windows Server over RDP

First login to a Windows Server VPS from Windows, macOS or Linux, then lock RDP down properly.

Beginner

Choose the right VPS size

Measure what your workload really uses and map it to a plan, instead of guessing and overpaying.

Intermediate

Backups and snapshots

Combine instant snapshots, scheduled backups and off-site copies into a restore plan you have actually tested.

Where to start

If the server is brand new, begin with securing a new Linux VPS. It covers the order of operations that matters most: updates, a personal user, SSH keys, a firewall and automatic patching. Everything else builds on that baseline.

Suggested paths

Hosting a website. Secure the server, set up the firewall, then follow nginx with Let's Encrypt or the full WordPress on nginx and MariaDB guide. Finish with backups and snapshots.

Running containers. Secure the server, install Docker and Compose, put nginx in front for HTTPS, and read the Docker section of the UFW guide so published ports do not bypass the firewall.

A private VPN. A Micro server and the WireGuard guide are all you need. Choose the region closest to you.

Windows Server. Start with connecting over Remote Desktop, which also covers locking RDP down.

Conventions used in the guides

  • Commands assume a user with sudo rights unless the guide says otherwise.
  • 203.0.113.10 and example.com are placeholders for your own server address and domain.
  • Where Debian-family and RHEL-family commands differ, both are shown.
  • Every VeloxMedia server includes a browser-based console in the control panel, so if a firewall or SSH change locks you out, you can always get back in.

Not sure which plan to use?

The sizing guide shows how to measure real memory, CPU and disk use and map it to a plan. Resizing later is done from the portal and keeps your data and IP address.

Guide questions

Do the guides work on any VPS provider?

Yes. The commands are standard for Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. A few steps mention VeloxMedia control panel features such as snapshots and the browser console, which have equivalents at most providers.

Which operating system do the guides use?

Most guides show commands for both Debian-family systems such as Ubuntu and Debian and RHEL-family systems such as AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. The Windows guide covers Windows Server.

What if I get locked out while following a guide?

Open the browser-based console from the VeloxMedia control panel to log in directly, then undo the firewall or SSH change. Rescue mode is available for deeper repairs.
